Helping You Find Relief from Dry Eyes

Living in Alberta comes with its own unique climate challenges that can contribute to dry eyes. The dry and often windy conditions, coupled with the increased use of digital screens, can exacerbate eye discomfort. If you’re experiencing symptoms like irritation, redness, a gritty sensation, or even blurred vision, you might be dealing with dry eye syndrome.

What Is Dry Eye?

Dry eye syndrome is a condition where the eyes either don’t produce enough tears or produce poor-quality tears that evaporate too quickly. This can result from various factors, including meibomian gland dysfunction, which affects the oil layer of your tears, causing tears to evaporate faster than they should.

Dry Eye Treatments: Restoring Comfort & Clarity

Our goal is to provide you with treatments to alleviate your dry eye symptoms and restore your eye health and comfort.

Punctal plugs are a common and minimally invasive solution. These tiny plugs are inserted into your tear ducts to slow down tear drainage, allowing your eyes to maintain moisture for a longer period. This procedure is quick and often provides noticeable relief.

Artificial tears and other ocular lubricants:  Products such as Sytane, Blink, Refresh, Liposic and, Idrop pure, Zaspray, and  Thealoz Duo are often used as first-line treatment for dry eye.  We often recommend preservative free products.

Pharmaceuticals likes restasis, xiidra, Cequa,  Platelet-rich plasma drops can be prescribed for more severe dry eye.

Meibomian glands play a crucial role in producing the oily component of tears. Dysfunction in these glands can lead to dry eyes. Meibomian gland expression is a gentle procedure to unclog and stimulate these glands, allowing for improved tear quality and stability.

We also recommend specially designed omega 3 products that can help improve meibomian gland function. When needed, we also recommend methods of doing warm compresses to help improve the health of these glands.

It’s important to note that while we offer several treatments for dry eyes, we refer out for LipiFlow and intense pulsed light (IPL) therapy.

Digital Screen Usage & Its Impact on Dry Eyes

In today’s world, digital devices have become integral to work, entertainment, and communication. Yet, prolonged screen use, like computers, smartphones, and tablets, can worsen dry eye symptoms. Reduced blinking while staring at screens diminishes tear distribution, causing evaporation and dryness, especially in dry climates like Alberta.

If you’re experiencing dry eye symptoms, irritation, or strain due to screens, take proactive measures for your eye health by contacting us today. Our dry eye therapy options can help offer relief, enhancing overall eye comfort and allowing continued screen use without jeopardizing ocular well-being.
